How to Prime a Vape Coil: Step-by-Step Guide to Avoid Burnt Hits
What Does Priming a Coil Mean?
Priming a coil means saturating the wicking material (usually cotton) with e-liquid before you fire your device. It's one of the most important steps in vaping that beginners often skip — and it's the number one cause of that horrible burnt taste on a new coil.
When you fire a dry or under-saturated coil, the cotton scorches instantly. Once burnt, a coil cannot be recovered — it needs to be replaced. Priming correctly protects your coil, extends its life, and ensures every puff tastes as it should from the very first draw.
What You'll Need
- A new replacement coil
- Your e-liquid of choice
- Your vape tank or pod
- A few minutes of patience
How to Prime a Vape Coil: Step by Step
Step 1 — Locate the Juice Ports
Look at your new coil. You'll see small holes or slots on the side — these are the juice ports, where e-liquid enters and saturates the cotton wick inside. These are your target.
Step 2 — Apply E-Liquid Directly to the Ports
Using your e-liquid bottle, apply 2–3 drops directly into each juice port. You want to see the cotton visibly darken as it absorbs the liquid. Don't flood it — just enough to wet the exposed cotton thoroughly.
If your coil has a top-fill opening (visible cotton at the top), add a drop or two there as well.
Step 3 — Fill Your Tank
Install the primed coil into your tank or pod, then fill with e-liquid as normal. Make sure the liquid level covers the juice ports on the coil.
Step 4 — Let It Sit
This is the step most people skip — and it matters. After filling, leave your tank to stand upright for 5–10 minutes. This allows the e-liquid to fully saturate the wick through capillary action. For thicker, high-VG liquids, wait closer to 10–15 minutes.
Step 5 — Break It In With Primer Puffs
Before firing your device, take 3–5 gentle puffs without pressing the fire button. These are called primer puffs or dry draws. They help pull e-liquid into the coil without applying heat, further saturating the wick.
Step 6 — Start Low and Work Up
If your device has adjustable wattage, start at the lower end of the coil's recommended wattage range (usually printed on the side of the coil). Take a few puffs at this lower setting before gradually increasing to your preferred wattage over the next 10–15 minutes.
This process — known as breaking in the coil — allows the cotton to fully adapt to the heat and e-liquid, resulting in better flavour and a longer coil lifespan.
Priming Guide by Device Type
| Device Type | Priming Method | Soak Time |
|---|---|---|
| Sub-ohm tank | Drops on ports + fill tank + primer puffs | 10–15 mins |
| MTL tank | Drops on ports + fill tank + primer puffs | 5–10 mins |
| Refillable pod (replaceable coil) | Drops on ports + fill pod + primer puffs | 5–10 mins |
| Refillable pod (built-in coil) | Fill pod + primer puffs only | 5 mins |
| Pre-filled pod | No priming needed — ready to use | N/A |
How Long Should a Coil Last?
With proper priming and care, a coil should last:
- Sub-ohm coils: 1–2 weeks (depending on usage and VG content)
- MTL coils: 2–4 weeks
- Pod coils: 1–3 weeks
High-VG liquids, sweetened e-liquids, and heavy usage will shorten coil life. Nic salts and 50/50 liquids tend to be gentler on coils.
Signs Your Coil Needs Replacing
- 🔴 Burnt or unpleasant taste — the most obvious sign
- 🔴 Reduced vapour production despite a full tank
- 🔴 Gurgling or leaking that wasn't there before
- 🔴 Dark, discoloured e-liquid in the tank
- 🔴 Muted or off flavour even with a fresh e-liquid
Common Priming Mistakes to Avoid
- Firing immediately after filling — always wait and do primer puffs first
- Over-saturating the coil — too much liquid can cause flooding and gurgling
- Starting at max wattage — always break in at the lower end of the range
- Using a thick VG liquid without enough soak time — high-VG liquids are viscous and need longer to absorb
- Ignoring the recommended wattage range — running a coil too hot burns it out fast
